Despite technology making our vehicles safer than they’ve ever been, accidents still are one of the top causes of death in the country. To stay safe on the road for yourself and your fellow drivers, keep some of these tips in mind the next time you get behind the wheel.
Wear your seat belt: It’s no longer cool to not wear your seat belt. Seat belts are one of the best ways to stay safe inside a car and greatly reduce the risk of injury or death. If you don’t wear a seat belt, the risk of sustaining serious injury, whether that’s being thrown from your car or into a window, increases. Half of all fatal car accidents involved victims not wearing seat belts.
Stick to the speed limit: Slow down! Almost a third of all fatal auto accidents are because of speeding. As you push your miles per hour past the legal limit for that area, you only increase the chance of a serious injury. Stay safe and stay at the proper speed. By going faster than you’re supposed, your reaction time to avoid a potential accident is decreased.
Keep your hands off your phone: One of the rising causes of fatal auto accidents is cell phone usage. There’s no reason to text or look at your phone while driving. If it’s an emergency or urgent, pull off the road and stop before making a call or text. If not, it can wait till you get to your destination.
Don’t drink and drive: There might not be a more dangerous thing to do before getting into a car. Police departments all across the country are cracking down as hard as they can on drunk driving and for good reason – it’s one of the top causes of auto deaths in America.
Keep your space: Don’t be impatient. Make sure you keep proper space between you and other drivers out on the road. Staying too close to a car can cause an easily avoidable accident if the vehicle in front of you stops suddenly.
